BATTLE OF THE BOOKS MISSION & HOW IT WORKS:

Battle of the Books is a program, started by Woozles in 1986, that stimulates reading in the context of friendly competition. If you’ve never seen a game, try to come some day. You will feel the excitement and be truly amazed at the phenomenal knowledge and recall of these young readers.

Battle of the Books was created by Woozles to:

  • encourage and promote the joy of reading;
  • stimulate reading beyond students' individual choices; &
  • recognize and reward the value of teamwork and competition.
The competition inherent in the Battle of the Books program takes place in the context of good sportsmanship and mutual respect.

There are two lists of books from which questions are made - one for the Elementary Division and one for the Teen Division. (Books can be easily ordered through Woozles.)

Typically two teams of four students each match wits about the content and authors of books from the lists. For programs held within schools or libraries, teams can be larger to enable more students participate.

Each game consists of 30 questions. 15 questions are directed to each team for the first opportunity to answer. When a team is asked a question, the team members have up to two minutes to consult with each other to come up with the correct title which counts for 3 points; only if the title is given correctly, the team has an opportunity to name the author which counts for another 2 points.

If the team which was asked the question does not know the title and/or the author or does not state them correctly, the other team is given an opportunity to answer. The second team has one additional minute to consult and can earn 2 points for the title and 1 for the author.

Games usually take about 45 minutes to play.

Total points earned in the game determine the winner.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS IN A BINDER:

The 2007 Battle of the Books Manual is now available ($30) and contains instructions, book lists, sample forms and all the questions that were used in the 2007 competition.
