Each year, Woozles honours a person in Atlantic Canada who has given outstanding service promoting awareness of children’s literature. This year we are thrilled to honour Susan Kerslake, whose whole life has shown a deep and consistent love of books, children, and small birds & animals.
In terms of “books”, Susan has worked in bookstores and libraries and is also a well-known author with 5 published novels, one of which was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award. She is a familiar, encouraging presence at the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia.
In terms of “children”, she has worked in day care programs and at the Child Life Dept. of the IWK where she has volunteered with kids with Cystic Fibrosis for over 25 years.
And in terms of “small birds & animals”, she has budgies and guinea pigs, and has documented the nesting of pigeons on her balcony, assisted baby ducks en route to the Public Gardens and is working on a magical mini-house called “Possum Hut”.
Susan truly enhances every life she touches!
