February Staff Picks

Woozles has added a shelf at the store to display our latest staff picks. In case you can’t make it in to see them in person, here is a rundown:

Lisa’s pick:
foodDon’t Play With Your Food! by Bob Shea
A brash and bumbling monster decided he is too full to eat a group of bunnies, but promises to do so the next day. But they go to the pool, and the next day to the fair, and then they all form a Stripey-stripe club, and the monster just isn’t sure about eating them anymore….. A great read aloud with colourful, shiny pictures!

Ann Marie’s picks:
piePie by Sarah Weeks
Alice’s Aunt Polly dies and leaves her award winning pie recipe to her cat Lardo, and leaves the cat to Alice. When Lardo goes missing, Alice has to solve the catnapping mystery. This book is a wonderful mystery novel, that at the same time elegantly deals with the death of a loved one and the power of friendship.

bitterBitterblue by Kristin Cashore
This is a truly intriguing fantasy novel that is a sequel to Graceling and a companion to Fire. Bitterblue is a teenage queen who explores her kingdom at night to try and figure out what kind of damage the previous king did to the kingdom with his mind-altering Grace. The novel is beautifully written, with a twisting plot, a well-built world, and a bit of romance.

Nadine’s pick:
meadowButterfly Eyes and Other Secrets of the Meadow by Joyce Sidman and illustrated by Beth Krommes
Rhymes, riddles, and beautiful pictures combine to make this a lovely book for all ages. Try to guess from the picture hints and the poetic text which animal is written about, turn the page and see the answer with some interesting factual information about each creature.

Suzy’s pick:
tackyTacky the Penguin by Helen Lester and illustrated by Lynn Munsinger
Tacky is the unwitting misfit penguin that lives near ice and sea with Goodly, Lovely, Angel, Neatly, and Perfect. These five penguins all march in a straight line, while clumsy Tacky manages to save the day for them all, suitably decked out in his Hawaiian shirt!

Lydia’s pick:
mageeA Camping Spree with Mr Magee by Chris van Dusen $18.99 in hardcover
For the pure fun of the pictures alone this book is a winner. Add the rhyming verses and Mr Magee’s wild camping adventure in his trailer, and this book is sure to please readers of all ages.
